Summary
Functional neurosurgery is the branch of neurosurgery that seeks to restore or improve neurologic function by manipulation of neural activity. Here we provide a brief review of the pathobiology of the disease processes functional neurosurgery addresses: movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, epilepsy, chronic pain, and psychiatric diseases including obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, and addiction. We also review emerging applications of neurosurgical techniques including deep brain stimulation not yet prevalent in clinical practice including brain–computer interfaces and disorders of consciousness. Finally, we discuss emerging technology likely to be useful in this rapidly advancing field, including high-density neural recordings, gene therapy, optogenetics, and stem-cell therapy.

A specialized dealloying technique called thermal dealloying was developed over 10 years ago for certain biomedical materials. This method is not widely used for synthesizing nanoporous metals. However, it offers advantages over conventional dealloying processes for fabrication of nanoporous structures, and is highly suitable for refractory metals that may be susceptible to oxidation during chemical/electrochemical dealloying and liquid metal dealloying. In this study, nanoporous structures were successfully fabricated from magnesium-based precursor alloys via sublimation of magnesium at elevated temperature under vacuum conditions. Different refractory metal diffusion rates affect the resulting density and amount of retained magnesium in each nanoporous material.

Repeated use of the preemergence herbicide triallate has selected for wild oat populations that are resistant (R) to field use rates. Field collections and an inbred R line were shown in greenhouse and petri dish dose response experiments to be 6- to 20-fold more tolerant to triallate than susceptible (S) lines. R populations and the inbred line were also resistant (8-fold) to the related thiocarbamate herbicide diallate, as well as to the chemically unrelated postemergence herbicide difenzoquat (60-fold). 14C-triallate uptake and translocation patterns were similar between R and S lines for the first 24 h after application. However, translocation of radioactivity was more rapid in S lines than R lines from 24 through 60 h after application. 14C-difenzoquat uptake was the same in R and S lines 12 h after application, but was 10 to 20% higher in R lines than S lines by 24 through 96 h after application. Similarly, translocation of radioactivity after 14C-difenzoquat application was 7 to 14% greater in R than S lines after 12 h, although translocated radioactivity amounts were not significantly different between R and S lines. The relatively minor differences in triallate and difenzoquat uptake and translocation patterns between R and S lines are most likely not of sufficient magnitude to explain the observed resistance levels.

Field experiments were conducted across the north-central United States to determine the benefits of various weed control strategies in corn. Weed control, corn yield, and economic return increased when a preemergence (PRE) broad-spectrum herbicide was followed by (fb) postemergence (POST) herbicides. Weed control decisions based on field scouting after a PRE broad-spectrum herbicide application increased weed control and economic return. Application of a PRE grass herbicide fb a POST herbicide based on field scouting resulted in less control of velvetleaf and morningglory species, corn yield, and economic return compared with a PRE broad-spectrum herbicide application fb scouting. Cultivation after a PRE broad-spectrum herbicide application increased weed control and corn yield compared with the herbicide applied alone, but economic return was not increased. An early-postemergence herbicide application fb cultivation resulted in the highest level of broadleaf weed control, the highest corn yield, and the greatest economic return compared with all other strategies. Weed control based on scouting proved to be useful in reducing the effect of weed escapes on corn yield and increased economic return compared with PRE herbicide application alone. However, economic return was not greater than the PRE fb planned POST or total POST strategies.

The overall objective of design against fatigue is to achieve adequate safety and reliability for minimum structural weight and, having this end in view, the fatigue performance of an aircraft structure is a major consideration in the design, testing and operation of an aircraft. This has not always been the case, indeed until the early 1950s the design of aircraft structures was based almost entirely on strength considerations with little regard to fatigue. However, in the decade following the Second World War a series of accidents both in the military and civil field, culminating in the Comet disasters, focused attention on the need to consider the problem of fatigue in design and provided the climate of opinion to support requirements for much more extensive and expensive full scale fatigue testing than had been contemplated hitherto. Since that time, advances in safety and reliability have been achieved in the face of customer requirements for major increases in overall fatigue life and for higher standards of day-to-day reliability of the structure. For example, in the military field a required fatigue life exceeding 6000 hours would not be exceptional now for a combat aircraft (Fig. 1) as compared with a life in service of about 1500 hours for such an aircraft in the years immediately following the Second World War. On the civil side, whereas lives of about 20 000 hours would have been considered adequate in the early 1950s, operators now require lives in excess of 60 000 hours. The European Airbus shown in Fig. 2 typifies such aircraft currently in service. Both military and civil aircraft are now expected to be in service for 20 or more years.
Typhoid fever acquired in the United States, 1999–2010: epidemiology, microbiology, and use of a space–time scan statistic for outbreak detection

Although rare, typhoid fever cases acquired in the United States continue to be reported. Detection and investigation of outbreaks in these domestically acquired cases offer opportunities to identify chronic carriers. We searched surveillance and laboratory databases for domestically acquired typhoid fever cases, used a space–time scan statistic to identify clusters, and classified clusters as outbreaks or non-outbreaks. From 1999 to 2010, domestically acquired cases accounted for 18% of 3373 reported typhoid fever cases; their isolates were less often multidrug-resistant (2% vs. 15%) compared to isolates from travel-associated cases. We identified 28 outbreaks and two possible outbreaks within 45 space–time clusters of ⩾2 domestically acquired cases, including three outbreaks involving ⩾2 molecular subtypes. The approach detected seven of the ten outbreaks published in the literature or reported to CDC. Although this approach did not definitively identify any previously unrecognized outbreaks, it showed the potential to detect outbreaks of typhoid fever that may escape detection by routine analysis of surveillance data. Sixteen outbreaks had been linked to a carrier. Every case of typhoid fever acquired in a non-endemic country warrants thorough investigation. Space–time scan statistics, together with shoe-leather epidemiology and molecular subtyping, may improve outbreak detection.

Wood (1951) published a list of lepidopterous larvae collected from commercial blueberry fields in Charlotte County. N.B. Among the species consistently collected annually from 1947 to 1952 are the cutworms Spaelotis clandestina (Harr.) and Polia purpurissata (Grt.). Although notes on both species have been given by various authors, including Crumb (1929, 1932), Gibson (1915), and Phipps (19301, no complete account of their life-histories has been published.

U Scorpii was observed in outburst for the tenth time in January 2010. We obtained optical and near-infrared spectroscopy from which we derive a helium abundance of N(He)/N(H) = 0.056±0.020 from the most reliable lines available; this is lower than most other estimates and indicates that the secondary is not helium-rich, as previous studies have suggested. Velocities are found to be up to 14,000 km s−1 in broad components and up to 1,800 km s−1 in narrow line components. The reddening of U Sco is found to be E(B-V) = 0.14 ± 0.12.

The United States, along with other nations and international organizations, has developed an elaborate system of ethical norms and legal rules to govern biomedical research using human subjects. These policies govern research that might provide direct health benefits to participants and research in which there is no prospect for participant health benefits. There has been little discussion, however, about how well these rules would apply to research designed to improve participants’ capabilities or characteristics beyond the goal of good health. When mentioned at all in the literature, this so-called enhancement research, as opposed to research aimed at diagnosing, preventing, curing, or treating illnesses or medical conditions, is usually dismissed without explanation.

Observations have been made on the ultrastructure of objects identified as ovarian balls from female Moniliformis after 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 days in the rat. Similar objects are present in the body cavity of female cystacanths from cockroaches. The ovarian balls from 1-day-old worms are formed of several cells which are enclosed within a surface coat. During development, the ovarian balls increase in size and cell number and the internal organization appears to become more complex. After 9 days of development in the rat, the surface coat of the ovarian balls can no longer be observed and microvilli are present. It also appears that the supporting syncytium has been formed by this time.
The effect of rearing type and prepartum nutrition on the intake and performance of lactating Greyface ewes at pasture

Eleven single-rearing and 14 twin-rearing Greyface (Border-Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes which had previously been individually fed indoors on three nutritional treatments (treatment 1, adequately nourished; treatment 2, moderately undernourished; treatment 3, severely undernourished) during the final 6 weeks of pregnancy, were subsequently grazed with eight non-lactating Greyface ewes on a ryegrass–white clover pasture for the first 14 weeks of lactation.
Herbage organic matter (OM) intakes and milk yields of ewes were measured weekly and the herbage OM intakes of lambs from week 7 of lactation.
Mean daily OM intakes were 36·6 (± 1·09), 38·9 (± 0·99) and 26·4 (± 0·93) g OM/kg body-weight for single- and twin-rearing, and non-lactating ewes respectively. Prepartum nutrition had no effect on intake. Maximum intakes were achieved in week 5 for twin-rearing ewes (53 g OM/kg) and week 4 for single and non-lactating ewes (54 and 38 g OM/kg respectively).
Mean daily weight gains over the period for single-, twin-rearing and non-lactating ewes were 89 (±22·2), 73 (±16·1) and 182 (±22·5)g respectively. There were no differences due to prepartum treatment.
There were significant differences (P < 0·05) in milk production between singleand twin-rearing ewes in the first 5 weeks of lactation. Twin-rearing ewes of prepartum treatment 1 produced consistently more milk in weeks 2, 3 and 4 of lactation, whereas ewes from treatment 3 tended to produce more milk than ewes from the other treatment groups thereafter.
Milk intakes of single lambs were always significantly greater than individual twin lambs, and single lambs ate significantly less grass during the herbage OM intake measurement period from week 7; their growth rates up to week 7 were also significantly greater.
No differences in the intake or growth rate of lambs could be attributed to the prepartum nutritional treatment of their dams.
Ewe maintenance requirements during lactation were estimated to be 242 (± 35·1) kJ ME/kg body weight/day; the efficiency with which ME was used for milk production to be 59%; and the efficiency with which ME was used for body-weight gain, 53%.
Lamb maintenance requirements were estimated to be 427 (± 143) kJ ME/kg W in weeks 1 and 2 of lactation and 287 (± 44·2) kJ/kg from week 7. Efficiency of utilization of energy for body-weight gain in each period was estimated to be 71 and 80% respectively.

Individual feed intakes of housed mature Greyface (Border Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes were adjusted weekly to maintain plasma 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations during the final 6 weeks of pregnancy at the following values: treatment 1 (adequately nourished; 17 ewes) less than 0·7 mmol/1; treatment 2 (moderately undernourished; 15 ewes) at about 1·1 mmol/1; treatment 3 (severely undernourished; 15 ewes) at about 1·6 mmol/1.
The mean energy intakes (MJ metabolizable energy (ME)/day) required to maintain the prescribed nutritional states in single- and twin-bearing ewes were: treatment 1, 14·3 and 16·3; treatment 2, 10·6 and 11·6; treatment 3, 8·1 and 10·0 respectively.
The moderate degree of undernourishment had no significant effect on the birth weight of single lambs, but reduced the birth weight of twins by 8·2%, while the more severe undernourishment reduced the birth weights of singles and twins by 21·5 and 25·8% respectively.
Foetal energy requirements, estimated by regression analysis, appeared to decrease from more than 2 MJ ME/kg/24 h at 35 days prepartum to 1·54 MJ ME/kg/24 h in the week before parturition.
The amounts of energy required to sustain the nutritional states of treatments 1–3 in non-pregnant ewes were calculated to be 348, 271 and 231 kJ ME/kg0.75/24 h, compared with a maintenance requirement, determined in this experiment, of 344 kJ ME/kg0.75/24h.
It is concluded that in individually fed ewes a nutritional state characterized by plasma 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations of 1·1 mmol/1 would constitute an acceptable compromise between an uneconomically high energy input and an excessive reduction in lamb birth weight.

The effect of genotype × environment interactions on biological efficiency in beef cows

An experiment was conducted to examine the response of three genotypes of beef cows to contrasting levels of nutrition supplied from grazed pasture. Twenty-two Hereford × Friesian (HF), 20 Aberdeen Angus × Friesian (AF) and 24 Welsh Black (WB) spring-calving beef cows with their Charolais-cross calves were used in 4 years consecutively. During the summer grazing period they grazed permanent pasture maintained at either 4 to 5 cm (short) or 7 to 8 cm (tall) sward surface height. Sward height treatment significantly (P < 0·001) affected cow and calf live-weight gain (0·498 v. 0·041 (s.e.d. 0·0405) kg/day and 1·12 v. 0·90 (s.e.d. 0·021) kg/day for cow and calf live-weight gain on the tall and short swards respectively). The live-weight gains of the HF and WB cows were similar, but the AF cows gained less weight on the tall sward and lost weight on the short sward. Calf live-weight gain reflected cow milk yield, with the calves from HF and AF cows having similar live weight gains (1·06 and 1·02 kg/day respectively) and those from WB cows having lower gains (0·95 kg/day; P < 0·001). The effect of sward height on calf live-weight gain was greatest in the WB-born calves because of the lower milk yield from WB cows. Body chemical composition changes of cows were predicted from live weight and body condition score, using prediction equations derived from separate groups of cows which were slaughtered at a range of body compositions for determination of chemical composition. Energy balances, calculated from changes in chemical composition, showed the AF cows to have the lowest energy balances with the WB cows the highest. Calculation of energetic efficiency and land use efficiency of weaned calf production taking account of annual food requirements indicated that the HF cows were most efficient, and the WB cows least efficient. The effect of increasing nutritional environment (as represented by sward height treatment) was such as to increase energetic efficiency for all genotypes, but land use efficiency was increased for HF and AF cows, and decreased for WB cows. These results indicate the factors such as size of cows, milk yield potential and pattern of nutrient partitioning can influence energetic land use efficiency of weaned calf production, and that important interactions between genotype and nutritional environment can occur in different measures of efficiency.
